A vow from organisers to clamp down the on grunts, groans and screams reverberating around SW19 appeared to have rung true as one of the games worst offenders - Serena Williams - began her title defence on Centre Court in uncharacteristic silence.

And even tennis megamouth Michelle Larcher de Brito - whose screams have been measure at 109 decibels, the same as a Formula One car - played in relative silence.

On Monday Tim Henman joined the calls for quiet. He said: “The grunting really isn't particularly attractive for anyone involved, and I really hope they can cut it out.

"These players don't do it in practice so why do they do it in a match?”
