A three-year-old boy has taken part in a fire safety course after accidentally setting his bedroom alight.

The boy from New Addington is among 35 children under 17 signed up to Addington fire station’s six-month course.

He was enrolled after playing with matches and dropping one on the floor of his home, causing the blaze.

The scheme, called Junior Fire Intervention Scheme, also includes a four-year-old boy and three seven-year-olds.

During the course, fire safety officers visited the boy to discuss the consequences of playing with matches. They also used DVDs and photographs to teach the group the dangers of fires.

Fire safety officers hope more parents will sign their children up to help reduce arson cases in the area.
