A nail-biting finish to a gruelling charity race nearly ended in a dead heat for first place.

Around 250 runners took part in the closely fought 'Help the Hospices' 10km run on Headley Heath last Sunday, organised by the Rotary Club of Leatherhead.

The first two runners to cross the finish line were Brian De Boise and David Hitchcock, with De Boise pipping Hitchcock to the post by less than a metre.

The result was so tight that each runner was given the same finishing time of 39 minutes and 43 seconds, with third placed Ian Dixon not far behind with a time of 40 minutes and 12 seconds.

The winner of the ladies race, Susanna Harrison, finished 13th overall with a time of 44 minutes and 12 seconds.

The event, sponsored by TWM Solicitors, raised over £6,000 for five hospices throughout Surrey and over £1,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Prizes were awarded for the first five places in both the men's and women's events, with the winner of each event also receiving a trophy.

Everyone who completed the event also received a medal in recognition of their achievement.
