Happy couple Mary and Edward Beyer tied the knot at a time when the international situation looked grim.
But as war approached the couple settled down into married life and now 70 years on, they can look back on a life lived through some of the most dramatic periods the last century.
This week Mary, 93, and Edward, 96, celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary quietly with their family.
The couple lived in Hatch Gardens, Tadworth for more than 50 years until Mary moved into Appleby House in Epsom for extra care and support.
Mr Beyer worked for the South East Gas Board for many years while Mrs Beyer honed her domestic skills.
“She was a very good dress maker and she was very good at making marmalade and chutney,” said their daughter Margaret Tickner.
The couple enjoy listening to music and doing crosswords in their retirement.
