A grandmother who “died twice” when she collapsed in the street cheered the policeman who helped save her life at an commendation ceremony for 47 unsung police heroes this week.

Alicia Hoad, 73, of Carshalton, was resuscitated by PC Martin Pratt, 26, PC Adam Biswell and Westcroft centre duty manager Michael Gavin when she fell in Benyon Rd in April.

On Tuesday the grandmother-of-six was reunited with the trio at the borough commanders commendations.

She said: “They saved my life, I don't remember a thing only going shopping in Sutton and waking up three weeks later in hospital.

“I'm so pleased they get some sort of recognition.”

Among those commended at the ceremony was singing police community support office Brad Ward who was invited onto Tonight’s the Night series, hosted by John Barrowman, after he set up the successful Community Idol 2008 in Sutton for 11-16 year olds.

Mr Ward, 43, was applauded by his peers and wife Louise, 29, an estate agent manager, for his “tireless effort” in organising the project, which attempted to engage Sutton's youth.

He said: “Today was fabulous. Singing on the BBC show was a dream come true.”

Detective Sergeant John McQuade, 52, a father-of-one who lives in Sutton, was also given a long-service commendation for 22 years of work.

DS McQuade, who currently works in CID, said: “It can be a frustrating but very rewarding job.

“I hate to think of violent people on the street and I like helping victims of crime: it's good to get justice for them.”

Sergeant Andrew Barnes, 36, of Sutton, who headed an investigation leading to the bust of a of a counterfeit DVD factory in December, 2008 was commended along with his team including constables Krystal Dawson, Colin Farmer, Simon Curzon and Kat Strong.

Also commended were constables Pat Simcox, Jacky Cole and Inspector Chris Green who helped Meals on Wheels deliver vital food to vulnerable elderly residents in February when snowfall brought the borough to a standstill.

Safer Transport team Sergeants Bryan Gibson and Andy De’Voreaux were also commended for successfully implementing an initiative to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour among young people on Sutton's buses.
