A student who was excluded from school has gone on to win a national vocational award after turning his life around.

Aaron Collins, of Croydon College, was named VQ Hero, Learner of the Year 2009 for London.

The VQ Hero Awards are a national celebration of vocational achievement.

When Aaron started his foundation construction award he was being educated in a pupil referral unit after being excluded from mainstream education.

He turned his life around at the college, getting a distinction in a BTEC First Diploma in art and design.

He has accepted a place at Kingston University to study architecture.

He is the student representative for his cohort and is studying towards a qualification in mentoring.

He also volunteers one hour a week to support young offenders.

He said: “I am really chuffed to be given such an award, especially on top of the principal’s award I won earlier this year. It’s been a struggle to get where I am, but the college has really helped me a lot.”

John Kerr, a member of the judging panel, said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to honour someone like Aaron.

“He is a fantastic example of the progression and opportunities that vocational qualifications can offer, living proof that there are many paths to success and an inspiration to us all.

“Aaron is one of the millions who take a vocational qualification every year as a stepping stone to a brighter future – VQ Day celebrates these learners’ achievements and those who help them gain this success.”

Aaron is due to be presented with his award today by celebrity chef James Martin.
