The Croydon Sea Cadets have raised some much-needed funds to get their mini-bus back on the road by holding a garage sale.
The sale, which took place in the Vale, Shirley on Saturday, June 13, raised over £400.
Visitors were treated to stalls, cakes, a tombola and car-washing, all of which were manned by the sea cadets themselves.
Alison Bentley, a volunteer with the cadets, said there had been a really good response from locals, who provided objects for the sale.
Mrs Bentley said: “It was a lovely day and we had a good turnout.”
As reported in the Croydon Guardian on June 10, the cadets need a large amount of money to keep going after repeated break-ins made their old building unusable.
But they have also suffered another disaster – the cadets’ minibus was damaged over the winter and will cost almost £1,000 to repair.
They use the minibus to make trips to rowing and canoeing sessions at the Royal Victoria Dock and for other events.
The money from the garage sale will be put towards fixing the bus.
Mrs Bentley said: “We’re hoping to collect enough to cover the rest of the repairs.”
