Blood marrow donors are urged to come forward this weekend to help a little girl beat a fatal illness.

Leukaemia charity ACLT has organised a drive on Saturday at Whitgift Shopping Centre to help find donors for six-year-old Imogin Appiah and others who suffer from the disease.

The ACLT's founder, Beverley De-Gale, described Imogin's current condition as "very critical" and appealed for potential heroes to come forward.

She said: "If you fall between the ages of 18 and 49 and you are generally healthy, please come down to see if you could save Imogin's life.

"For the donor it would be a relatively simple procedure but it could mean that Imogin goes on to live another 70 or 80 years of life."

The Croydon Guardian has been following Imogin's progress since she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

She has been in and out of hospital over the past six months and has recently fought off a life-threatening infection.

Imogin is undergoing chemotherapy at the Royal Marsden hospital as they try to bring the disease under control.

Her mum Sheila said: "We hope people will come forward for the registration drive on the Saturday - it's important.

"We have been going back and forth to the hospital for the chemo.

She added that Imogin is responding well to her treatment and was keen to praise staff at the Royal Marsden and the wider community for their help.

"I want people to know the hospital are doing a fantastic job.

"The community have been so supportive."

The drive is open to all and will be found at Allders Square (opposite WHSmith) between 12pm and 5pm.
