Chessington World of Adventures (CWA) is planning a “parents charter” of non-embarrasing behaviour after a poll revealed that a quarter of children will not be seen in public with their parents.

The survey of 2,000 children was commissioned by the Leatherhead Road park and lists a top 10 of most humiliating antics, including dancing, holding hands and the “spit wash”.

Chessington bosses now want children to draw up a list of rules for parents through their Shout About website.

David Smith, CWA general manager, said: “Just about everyone, at some time or other, has been on the receiving end of embarrassing antics from a parent, friend or colleague but I guess being shown up in public tends to be more excruciating for children.

“I’m sure that most parents are unaware of the embarrassment they are causing their children but some blatantly do it on purpose - we see it all the time at the park.”

The survey also found that 17 per cent of children wished for different parents and four in 10 believed they deliberately embarrass them to see their reaction.
