Walton Casuals skipper Craig Lewington insists the Stags must forget the past and look to the future when they kick-off their Ryman Division One South campaign in August.

A turbulent season last time out, which saw former boss John Morris step aside due to ill-health, ended with Casuals narrowly avoiding relegation.

But Lewington reckons that should be the furthest thing from the player’s minds as they return to pre-season training.

He said: “It is a fresh start and a clean slate for everybody involved.

“Spencer Collins has had time to settle into the manager’s role now, and he can put his own ideas into place.

“When he took the job last year he was dealing with John’s players, and then quite a few of them left and it was a case of getting through the season.

“But the last four or five games last year we were playing quite well, and if we can take that into our pre-season we could get off to a good start.”

Lewington, who is once again expected to captain the Stags, was one of the mainstays last season as the line-up changed around him on a weekly basis.

And he is well aware of where improvements need to be made.

Lewington added: “We need someone who can score us a few goals - I know that is easier said than done but that is the aim.

“We were pretty strong at the back but we really struggled to score goals, and that has to be improved.

“I think with Kingstonian and Cray going up the division is a lot weaker this year.

“If we can bring the right players in and get off to a good start, I think we should be aiming for a top ten place at least.”
