A teenager involved in a bike accident which caused traffic chaos at the top of Sutton Town Centre yesterday suffered minor injuries.

Lewis Shoulders, 16, was driving a 50cc scooter on Carshalton Road when the driver in front of him broke suddenly, making him fly over his bike’s handlebars.

He is now resting at home with two bruised ribs, a fractured shoulder and whiplash.

Mr Shoulders said: “I was heading down Carshalton Road, on my way home from work. I was riding at about 20mph when the car in front of me suddenly broke.

“I had to brake and got thrown from my bike.”

The crash prompted several police officers to go to Carshalton Road on the junction with Langley Park Road, near the B&Q DIY centre, to divert the traffic from the area, according to eyewitnesses.

A spokesman for Sutton Police said: "Police reports indicate that the male motorcyclist suffered ‘minor injuries’ after being involved in an accident at the junction of Carshalton Road and Langley Park Road yesterday, Thursday June 25, at 4.10pm.

"The biker is believed to have been thrown over his handlebars."

A member of staff from B&Q, who did not want to be identified, said: “It took me ages to get here, at around four o’clock, because of this accident. When I got closer I saw the bike and the man lying there.

“There are loads of police officers out there still.”

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a motor vehicle accident at Carshalton Road with Langley Park Road. We sent one single response unit and one ambulance crew.

"A man reported to be in his 20s was taken to St Helier Hospital."
