The American Women of Surrey (AWS) have donated 125 heart-shaped pillows to the breast cancer units at Ashford Hospital in Staines and St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.

The pillows are designed and shaped to support the armpit of patients and ease pain after breast cancer surgery, as it is not unusual to experience tension where there is swelling of the lymph nodes underneath the arm.

The AWS held sew, stuff and package days over two days to produce the pillows that were funded by selling specially designed heart cards, as well as donations from Mail Boxes, Etc and Fabric Warehouse in Weybridge and John Lewis in Kingston.

Regina Santos, the hospitals lead breast care nurse, said: “We’re happy that the AWS have chosen our hospital for this donation. It will bring cheer and comfort to our patients, after having a breast cancer operation. The heart shape of the pillow shows the love and kindness AWS members have and both our patients and staff at the unit are grateful for this gift.”
