After spending seven years in the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention centre campaigners have said a Battersea man must be charged or released.

Shaker Aamer, who is originally from Saudi Arabia, had indefinite leave to stay in the UK when he was captured in 2001.

Next week campaigners are holding a public meeting in Battersea to discuss why Mr Aamer - who is the last Londoner to be held in the centre - has not been released.

Speakers include former Guantanamo detainee Moazzam Begg, Battersea MP Martin Linton, solicitor Gareth Peirce and Mr Aamer’s father in law.

A spokesman for campaign group Cageprisoners said: “After seven years without a trial or charge Shaker Aamer should be returned to his family.”

Mr Aamer has a wife and four children, the youngest of which, who is now seven, who he has never seen.

The meeting, on Saturday 11 from 3 to 5pm, will be held at Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill.
