A music spectacular will help raise money for Croydon Commitment.

The Brit School, the renowned music school in Croydon, is putting on Festiva, combining music, theatre and dance.

Elizabeth Penney, director of music, explained the school wanted to be part of the “great work” done by Croydon Commitment.

She said: “The whole idea was to get involved in a local positive initiative.

“We do lots of work with national projects so we were really keen to do something much more local and about Croydon.

“We are a Croydon school and this our chance to show we are really proud of Croydon.”

The event is a showcase of work by Year 12 pupils in music and musical theatre.

The music will be based on a production commissioned for the Brit School by a new academy in Birmingham, called One Vision New Version.

It will include a string of pop hits from 1991, when the Brit School was founded, to the present day, with Mrs Penney admitting there will be a Michael Jackson song in tribute to the pop icon.

Among the musical theatre acts will be works entitled Title of Shows, Songs from a New World, Violet and Footloose.

Mrs Penney added: “It should be an up tempo and fun night.

“There will be something for everyone. It will be a varied and exciting set.”

Croydon Commitment fundraises on behalf of local charities in the borough.

One of its main events is the Croydon C100 Challenge, which sees teams try and create as much money as possible for charity from £100.

This year’s C100 Challenge is in full swing, with the Croydon Guardian making up one of the 14 teams.

Over the next few weeks we will be holding a series of fundraising events in our bid to maximise our money for charity.

The Festiva event takes place at Fairfield Halls on Thursday, July 16, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Fairfield Halls box office.
