A disabled persistent nuisance has been handed a five-year Asbo after drunkenly terrorising part of the borough.

Geoffrey Coppin, 59, was given a five-year post conviction Asbo after pleading guilty on March 3 to a charge of criminal damage to a cafe from December 2008.

The owner of the cafe, in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath, took pity on Coppin and let him sit in the cafe, giving him free tea and coffee.

But Coppin threw that kindness back in his face by smashing his front window with the arm of his wheelchair after the owner became fed up with him abusing his customers and refused to let him in.

He had a history of being drunk and disorderly and was known to harass people when drunk.

Under the terms of the Asbo Coppin is not allowed in Thornton Heath or its train station, he is not allowed in Mayday Hospital unless he is being treated and he is not allowed anywhere near West Croydon station or it’s car park.

There is an added condition that Coppin is not allowed to booze outdoors anywhere within the M25.

Mr Coppin had an earlier conviction for threatening rail staff at West Croydon where he exposed himself to staff and a group of young children.

A police spokesman said: “Geoffrey Coppin has already had an Asbo that expired in April 2009. During the time the Asbo was in place, Mr Coppin breached it consistently.

"Mr Coppin is an aggressive alcoholic who regularly uses the arm of his wheelchair as a weapon."

Superintendent Dave Stringer said: “There is a minority of, mainly, adult men who abuse alcohol and then behave in an antisocial manner, often in our shopping centres. We have taken robust action against a number of such individuals.

“Many have moderated their behaviour and some have sought rehabilitation. We support those who seek to change, but will continue to use these powers against those who do not moderate their behaviour themselves.”
