Young people are throwing themselves into classes, courses and qualifications.
That’s the message from Merton Council’s youth service, which has announced a big rise in the number of children and teenagers in the borough it has helped to pick up academic and personal awards.
In 2008-09, 702 young people won awards - compared to 475 in 2007-08.
Their achievements include the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, computing, sports and language courses, and academic qualifications.
A council spokesman said the figure topped the national average, and was down to close work with local youth groups.
Cabinet member for children’s services, councillor Debbie Shears, said: “This is fantastic news for the youth service.
"Everyone in the team works extremely hard to provide a wide range of activities for young people to take part in and enjoy.”
