People are being encouraged to compost their unwanted fruit and vegetables this summer with a bargain-priced compost bin.
To get people recycling their kitchen and garden waste over the warm months, Hounslow Council is offering a limited number of compost bins at cut price.
The offer is designed to help borough residents do their bit for the environment without having to fork out for expensive bins.
Emma Barnett, waste reduction adviser for the council, said: “If you want to do your bit to help the environment, but aren’t sure how to incorporate recycling into an already busy lifestyle, then composting at home is an easy way to make a difference.
“This great offer being run by the council is the perfect excuse to get started – so don’t miss out on these bargain bins.”
Recycling kitchen and garden waste in compost bins not only produces nutritious compost to help gardens bloom, but it also reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
Every day thousands of tonnes of waste ends up on landfill sites where the greenhouse gas, methane is produced as the waste rots.
However, about a third of household waste can be composted at home reducing the amount of methane gas produced and providing high-quality, free compost for people’s gardens in the process.
Household waste that can be composted includes egg shells, kitchen paper, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags and even shredded bank statements. Grass cuttings and twigs can also be composted down as garden waste.
Since the reduced bin scheme was set up in Hounslow, more than 2,5000 compost bins have already been sold to green-minded residents.
The compost bins are available from £22 until September 30.
