A Sutton MP has had his Facebook account suspended shortly after organising a major demonstration to save a night bus.

LibDem Tom Brake, for Carshalton and Wallington, was helping young campaigners organise the protest last night.

Over 100 people gathered in Wallington at 10pm to protest the axing of the only night bus between Croydon and Sutton.

The event was organised by sisters Laura and May Wheeler and they were helped by Mr Brake.

This morning he found his Facebook account had been disabled.

He said: “Facebook have shut down my account because they thought I was spamming people.

“I was using it in a legitimate way to inform people about the N213 protest. As a result we had between 180 and 200 people turn up.

“It was a great success.”

He said he was tabling an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament highlighting to Facebook that MPs and others use their accounts to contact people legitimately.

“I am hoping Facebook are going to do a complete u-turn and reinstate my account so we can carry on campaigning about the issue.”

The N213, the only night bus running between Croydon and Sutton was cancelled by TfL on July 4 because it says the route is only used “lightly”.

Laura Wheeler, 22, and her friends fear vulnerable Sutton youths will be forced to take unlicensed cabs or walk home after a night out in Croydon.

They set up a Facebook group which has gathered almost 3,000 members in under a week.

The campaigners have also won the support of Councillor Steve O’Connell, the Greater London Assembley representative for Croydon and Sutton.

He has vowed to appraoch Boris Johnson and TfL to get the bus reinstated.

He said: “I fear for the safety of these young people, if there is a legitimate case I will approach TfL.”

The campaigners are planning to approach Boris Johnson when he comes to Croydon later this month.
