Mitcham Road in Tooting is to be made safer following a high number of traffic accidents in the last three years.

The busy shopping area saw 80 accidents cause injuries between 2006 and 2008, including 19 serious casualties.

Almost half the accidents in the stretch between Amen Corner and Tooting High Street involved pedestrians.

The council hopes to slow vehicles down, decrease crossing waiting times and make walkways less crowded.

Plans include removing unnecessary clutter, installing a northbound cycle lane, banning right turns into Byton Road and installing raised areas on crossings to slow cars down.

The changes have been agreed by councillors and detailed plans will be drawn up for public consultation.
