Friends and family have attended a funeral service for a young man who drowned in the River Thames just days before his 22nd birthday.
Surbiton resident James Spencer, who worked in the Gazebo pub in Kingston, was drinking on a boat with friends on the night of his death and fell into the river at about 12.30am on Friday, June 19.
His body was recovered by officers the Sunday after.
Reverend David Houghton held the touching service at St Mark’s Church, Surbiton, on Monday, July 6.
Richmond CID’s Detective Inspector Mick Snowden, who is investigating his death, also attended.
He said: “We felt it was appropriate we went and the family said they would like us there. It’s all so sad.”
Mystery still surrounds the circumstances of the musician’s death.
Detectives believe there was an argument near the houseboat where he was drinking on with friends, at which point he left the scene.
When he returned to the boat a while later he somehow ended up in the water, where he was seen to “get into difficulties”.
D Insp Snowden said Mr Spencer was with four other people on the boat shortly before his death, a work colleague and regulars from the pub where he worked.
He said: “We need to put together the series of events that led up to his death and would urge anyone with information to call us.”
