Chertsey Town set off in preparation of the coming football season with a thumping seven-goal victory over Combined Counties Division One champions Staines Lammas on Saturday.

Town went two goals up in the first half through Steve Goddard, who has arrived from Met Police.

The first came on 15 minutes when he was quickest to react when a free kick was awarded 25 yards out and got round the Staines back line to fire home.

His second came ten minutes later, firing in from a winged cross.

He put his side three up on 57 minutes by converting a left wing cross with his head at the far post. The returning Matt Grave to Alwyns Lane found the net two minutes later by firing in low at an acute angle.

Only five more minutes passed before Chertsey piled on more misery with former AFC Wimbledon defender Oliver Treacher shooting at goal from 20 yards.

The strike took a deflection en-route to the net to put Town five up with still 19 minutes remaining.

There was next to no danger created at the other end of the park with three Bamford brothers along side dependable Steve Gibson forming an impregnable barrier.

Lammas, now in full retreat, conceded a penalty with a defender flying full length top save on the line with his hands as Chertsey shirts lined up for a pop at goal. Steve McNamara put the spot kick away.

Dieter Rose, also from the Wimbledon stable, ran down the Staines Lammas goalkeeper’s clearance attempt for a late bonus goal to give Spencer Day a comforting start to the season.

He readily admits that this solitary showing is far from the finished article but with top striker John Pomroy returning soon from holiday, the combination of him and Steve Goddard is likely to provide for a powerful strike force.

Player of the season Steve Gibson also gave his usual strong performance and lacked nothing with the defence looking as strong once more.

Stuart and Gavin Bamford have been joined from Uxbridge by another brother, Barry who also looked good.

Regulars from last season’s rivals in Joe Johnson on the left from Camberley Town and Andre De-Lissier from North Greenford United are further significant signings. Defender Jack Francis who comes from Hampton & Richmond Borough is another signing coup.

High hopes are being placed on Town’s expanding youth set up and five teenage players featured at some time in the win over Staines Lammas to make a highly competitive squad of player vying for places for this season’s challenge.
