Police say that that a man in his 30s received serious burns to his arm face and neck after a car was burnt out in Chetwode Road, Burgh Heath at 2.16am today (Monday).
The man was taken to St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, and then transferred to a specialist burns unit at East Grinstead.
Fire crews were called to the incident which they say is suspicious and alerted the police.
A silver Peugeot 306 was completely burnt out.
Police officers who attended were told that a man was taken to hospital suffering from burns.
Detective Sergeant Glenn Parker said: “We need to establish the facts of how this man received his injuries and who was responsible for setting the car on fire.
“At this stage we do not know, which is why I am appealing to anyone who was in the Chetwode Road area of Burgh Heath, between 1.30am and 2.15am this morning, who may have seen or heard anything to come forward.
“The man has burns to his arm, face and neck and he has now been transferred to a burns unit in East Grinstead.
"Anyone who has any information, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may seem, is urged to come forward as it could make all the difference to this investigation.”
Officers remain at the scene of the fire in Chetwode Road.
