A man was decapitated by a train and his dismembered body thrown on to a Wimbledon platform in front of horrified rail travellers on Sunday evening.
The 30-year-old is thought to have jumped in front of an express train bound for Poole just after 6pm.
Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.
An emergency services source said body parts were spread across the platform leaving some shocked witnesses in tears.
A number of passengers waiting on the busy platform as the train passed, believed to be travelling at around 70mph, dialled 999 acording to the ambulance service.
A rapid response medic found the man, yet to be named, dead at the scene.
An ambulance and senior paramedic arrived moments later to co-ordinate a response to the incident.
The train was stopped and a coroner summoned to remove the body before the line was reopened at 7.25pm.
No South West Trains or First Capital Connect trains could stop in Wimbledon until 9pm.
Some District Line Underground services were also disrupted briefly after the incident.
