A resident's group has won a campaign to block plans for a regular fun run on one of Merton’s most popular green spaces.
The Friends of Cannon Hill Common group was opposed to allowing up to 200 runners ploughing over the land for up to five laps.
Local councillors and residents came out against the idea after the group lobbied the community to reject the event.
In an email seeking views on the plan, Carolyn Heathcote, secretary of group, said: “The numbers involved could reach 150-200.
"It would seem to me that in order to have a run of 5km it would be necessary to run round the Common five times.
"My view is that this is not an appropriate activity for a Grade one listed nature reserve.”
Merton Council’s leisure and culture development manager, Christine Parsloe, told the Friends the proposals had been dropped because of the views given.
Instead the local authority has started looking for alternative venues in the borough for a similar event.
