A fire which consumed part of an unoccupied flat above WH Smith in Wallington is being investigated.
Firefighters were inundated with calls from people who saw the smoke rising from the building in the High Street on Sunday, at about 4pm.
Four pumps and two specialist pumps from Wallington Fire Station attended the scene and fire fighters needed three hours to put out the fire.
A fire officer said: “There was no need to evacuate the building because the shops were shut and the flats above it were empty.
“We don’t know the cause of the fire at the moment, but our team is investigating it.”
