Women’s Land Army veteran Lillian Richmond, 89, was left astonished this week after a visitor honoured her wartime service.
Now a resident at Epsom Lodge care home, Miss Richmond was surprised when Epsom mayor Councillor Jan Mason dropped in to visit, and even more surprised to be given a memento of her wartime service.
Miss Richmond's sister Amy Gray organised the event, which finished with afternoon tea hosted by Kevin Middleton – owner of the care home.
Miss Richmond was in the army for three years before she joined the Army Territorial Service (ATS) in 1950 as a recruitment sergeant, working out of their Knightsbridge office.
After retiring from the ATS Miss Richmond moved to Brighton and started working for Brighton Council.
She recently moved to the care home to be close to her family.
