A group of children got stuck into snacks and treats when they paid a special visit to Sainsbury’s in Leatherhead on Tuesday.
They had been invited along by Mend, a children’s healthy living organisation, to learn about the importance of healthy eating, a message they will pass on to their families.
The children were there to get a taste of healthy fruit, vegetables and other delicious snacks that were low in sugar, salt and fat.
With more than one in three children over the healthy weight range for their age and height, a supermarket tour is an important part on the Mend Programme.
The children and their families learned how to understand labels on food and how to steer away from unhealthy choices except for an occasional treat.
Melanie Simcock, programme manager for Leatherhead Mend said: “Obesity is increasing due to people’s lack of understanding of leading a healthier lifestyle and how to keep active.
“This is what the course is about, it teaches people to make healthier food choices and that keeping fit and active doesn’t have to be boring but can actually be fun.
“By giving people this knowledge, it will stop them from being over their ideal weight and make them a lot fitter and healthier. The supermarket tour is a key component of the programme, where families can put into action what they’ve learned and try new things.”
The Mend programme is for children aged seven to 13 who are above their ideal weight. The course is run for children and their parents and carers to come along and learn how to be fitter, healthier and happier.
