Following the successful installation of a lift at Balham station, Battersea MP Martin Linton has added his voice to calls for greater access at more rail stations.

Mr Linton, who is chairman of the House of Common’s steering group, Access for Rail Stakeholders, said while a Government scheme to increase access has been successful more needed to be done.

He said the Access For All (AFA) scheme, which paid for the Balham lift, is also funding lifts at Clapham Junction.

He said: “The station has been there for 146 years, but this will be the first time that many people have been able to access any of the 17 platforms in this station.

"I have constituents living next to the station who have to take a taxi to Victoria in order to get on a train that will stop six minutes later within a few yards of their home at Clapham Junction.”

Mr Linton said the group he chaired needed to look at three issues.

First, access from the station to the platform, secondly, access from the platform to the train, and thirdly, what happens once a person gets on the train.

The AFA scheme will improve access at 125 stations nationwide by 2014.
