Kids’ lives have been put at risk by the removal of a pedestrian crossing, families in a Wimbledon street have claimed.
They are calling for the crossing in Haydon’s Road to be reintroduced, after it was taken away earlier this year.
They claim a new road layout in the area, as well as extra traffic from a new housing development at Plough Lane, has made the road extremely difficult to get across.
Campaign organiser Joy Sansom said: “We are all very concerned over the safety of our children.
"Adults are now finding it difficult to cross and we fear that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
"Frustrated drivers are putting their foot down once they have got through the lights outside the new development and there is now nothing to stop them from speeding up.
“We want Merton council to put people before cars. Haydons Road has become dangerous and we want the council to act quickly to make it a safe place for the people that live here.”
Earlier this month residents handed the council a petition calling for a new crossing and more traffic calming measures.
They also demanded more consultation on future changes to the road layout.
