Detectives are investigating how a 35-year-old man came to be found with a serious head injury at the roadside near Sutton town centre.
A passing delivery driver discovered the pedestrian lying near the junction of Gibson Road and St Nicholas Way at about 2.20am on Sunday.
The man, who may have been in the road for several minutes, was treated in an intensive care unit but has now been moved on to a hospital ward.
Detective Sergeant Paula Bond, of Sutton CID, said: “We don’t know whether the man has suffered a fall or been the victim of a crime.”
