The council is trying to improve the range of services available to people with dementia by promoting them during the Dementia Awareness Week.
These services include a cafe in Cheam for dementia patients and their carers, every first and third Saturday of the month which offers information sessions, including stress management courses, a buffet lunch and musicals, pianists, singers and jazz bands. The cafe is run by The Alzheimer’s Society and supported by the council.
A popular Tuesday activity club for people with dementia is also run by the Alzheimer’s Society every Tuesday and include chair-based exercise classes, lunch club and day trips, such as green bowls and picnics. About 85 people a month attend the activity club.
Robert Rumsby and his wife, who has dementia, regularly attend the Tuesday activity club and the cafe.
Mr Rumsby said: “The Tuesday activity club is a central place for us all to meet up and it’s beneficial to us both.
“All of us who go regularly have become good friends and it really helps to be able to share each other’s experiences and problems.”
