A new group has been created to look at ways of ensuring Tooting Common remains a diverse place for wildlife, which can be enjoyed by residents now as well as future generations.
The Friends of Tooting Commons, which was set up following a meeting of the Tooting Commons management advisory committee last month, will work with Wandsworth Council to develop ideas for the common.
On the list of improvements are plans to upgrade a playground, creating wildlife meadows and bat boxes, looking at the pond ecology and installing more benches and bins.
A spokesman for the new group said: “Setting up a friends group will allow it to apply for funds aimed specifically at community groups, which aren’t available to local councils.
The friends are hoping to make some big improvements.”
The friends, which will report to the committee, is asking people for their ideas by asking them to complete a questionnaire.
Committee chairman Simon Hemsley said: “This is really exciting. We now have the chance to move forward on projects.”
Councillor Leonie Cooper, a committee member, added: “Local people will decide exactly what the priorities for the new Friends Fundraising Group will be, the questionnaires will guide us.”
You can find out more about the group’s work at the next meeting on Wednesday August 19, at 7pm in the Mess Room on Doctor Johnson’s Avenue.
