A controversial planning application for four skyscrapers in central Croydon has been unexpectedly withdrawn.
Menta's plans to regenerate Cherry Orchard Road next to East Croydon station were recommended by officers for refusal.
But at the eleventh hour, minutes before a planning committee meeting tonight, the developers withdrew the application.
A number of residents had arrived in the public gallery to hear the discussion of the plans, which are strongly opposed by some.
Among those against the scheme were the two prospective parliamentary candidates Councillors Gavin Barwell and Gerry Ryan and Croydon Central MP Andrew Pelling.
Last week, Craig Marks from Menta expressed his disappointment that the council had recommended to refuse the £500m development.
He believed the scheme would benefit Croydon’s massive regeneration plans, while creating jobs in the area.
Menta have remained silent on whether they will appeal or come back to the table with a new proposal.
