Epsom firecrew were called to High Down Prison in Banstead on Sunday evening after a prisoner set fire to his cell.

Prison officers rescued the prisoner, who was unhurt, and the fire was put out by firecrew wearing breathing apparatus.

Two days earlier, on Friday evening, Epsom firefighters were called to Epsom General Hospital when they were summoned by medical staff after a patient threatened to commit suicide by throwing himself from the roof.

Firemen persuaded the patient to come down an extension ladder with them to safety.

They were back at the hospital at 4am on Monday, when they were summoned to deal with a small fire in a kitchen at Rowan House accommodation block. It was put out by crew wearing breathing apparatus.

On Sunday evening they were called out to the M25 when a coach caught fire between the Leatherhead – Reigate junctions.

They surrounded the vehicle with foam to put out the fire.

No-one was injured.
