Change is a funny thing. Such were my thoughts on a recent day trip to Hastings – the formerly thriving seaside resort which became a dilapidated shadow of its former self and is now undergoing rejuvenation. Strangely enough the main industry of the area was originally fishing but now, where wooden fishing boats once dappled the sea shore, American-style mini golf courses and copious numbers of rock shops stand. Beautiful Georgian and Victorian houses scatter the coast in their simple elegance reminiscent of those idyllic 19th century beach holidays. Not far away the historic town of battle can be found where one fateful day in 1066 changed the course of English history for good. It is bizarre to think that because one man named William the Conqueror was able to reach the top of one fairly ordinary looking hill against a tired Saxon army, our entire national identity was changed for ever. Yes change is strange indeed since one event however insignificant can alter history for eternity.
