Merton workers clocked up nearly 5,000 miles in a challenge to get more people travelling by bike.

The Transport for London (TfL) initiative encouraged companies of similar sizes to complete against each other to see which organisation could get the most people cycling to work and cycling the most miles.

Five companies from Merton signed up to the challenge with URS Corporation cycling the furthest with 2,664 miles, followed by the Ski Club of Great Britain with 1,888 miles.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Integrated Programme Delivery said: “I’m pleased to see so many companies entering and competing in the Workplace Cycle Challenge this year.

“Across London almost a million miles were commuted by bike in just one month. "I hope that many people who have been introduced to the benefits of cycling as part of the challenge will take it up as a regular way to get work.”
