The maker of hit movie Calendar Girls is filming in Croydon and auditioning for extras.

Nigel Cole’s new film Dagenham Girls is set in the late ‘60s and focuses on the lives of women workers at the Ford Dagenham factory.

The production company is looking for men and women to take part in the filming as extras. Men should have long hair, as opposed to being shaved or buzz cut.

Ideally a minimum of three inches is required. Women should wear either bobs or shoulder length hair, ideally with no highlights, although block colour dye is acceptable. For both male and females all ages are welcome although they ask that people do not have a heavy sun tan.

Elizabeth Karlsen of Number 9 Films said: "Although Dagenham Girls is set in 1968, the challenges for women today remain as prevalent and constant as they did then. "As film-makers, our own challenge will be to create the events, both hilarious and tragic in turn, that led to a groundbreaking law that enabled the empowerment of women around the world. We are delighted to have assembled such a first rate cast and a director in Nigel Cole.”

Working in extremely impoverished conditions and for long hours, the women at the Ford Dagenham plant finally downed tools in 1968 when they were reclassified as “unskilled”.

They take on their American “paymasters”, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government itself, to strike a blow for equal pay for women.

The catalyst for the women’s struggle is Rita (Sally Hawkins) whose fiery temper and occasional unpredictability proves to be a match for all of her male opponents.
