Angry leaseholders of Lambeth Council properties facing massive service charge increases are planning a widespread non-payment of bills in protest at the hikes.
Last month, thousands of leaseholders across the borough received estimated service charges that have more than doubled, adding hundreds of pounds to residents’ bills.
In some cases they have increased up to 18 times over.
Leaseholders argue the bills are exorbitant, and are in many cases for services they do not receive.
As a result campaign organisers are planning a series of secret meetings across the borough to get as many of the borough’s 10,000 leaseholders as possible to pledge not to pay their bills in protest.
A Lambeth Living spokeswoman said any protest would harm all residents in the long run as services would suffer.
She said: “We hold regular meetings during which we try to respond to sort out any difficulties and respond to concerns.”
“While we appreciate there are some wrinkles in the service that need to be ironed out, we are working hard to resolve these and to improve leaseholder services, and would urge residents to bear with us.”
