A 17-year-old who died in hospital after injuries sustained in a police pursuit has been named.
Surrey Police said Liam Albert, of Vectis Road, Mitcham, was suspected of driving a stolen car but failed to stop for police in Merton, sparking a chase from the Metropolitan Police.
Met officers driving a marked BMW followed the driver for about 10 miles before he collided with a silver Daewoo in Lammas Lane, Esher, at about 4.50am on July 8.
The teenager was taken to Kingston Hospital and died at about 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 15.
Some members of the teenager’s family were at his bedside when he died.
The driver and passenger in the Daewoo, who were also injured in the crash, have since been released from hospital.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating.
IPCC commissioner, Mike Franklin, said: “This is a sad incident in which a young man has died and I extend my condolences to his family.
"I also don’t underestimate the effect this must have had on the officers involved and I am sure that Metropolitan Police are taking the relevant steps to support them.
“The IPCC will now manage an investigation by Surrey Police to determine the exact details of the incident, including whether or not the police officers involved in the pursuit followed the correct policies and procedures relating to pursuits.”
