Campaigners against a proposed phone mast in Lower Green Road, Esher, hope children’s power will prevent plans going ahead.

For 90 minutes on Saturday, July 18, about 60 local children added their hand or footprints to a banner opposing the mast Vodafone hopes to install.

Vodafone submitted an application last September to erect the mast, close to a footpath used by pedestrians to get to Esher station, but councillors turned it down because they believed the mast’s equipment would prevent the access remaining safe.

Vodafone appealed the decision and will now find out at a hearing on Tuesday, July 28, if it can carry out the plans.

Esher mum Jackie Heaslewood, who organised the banner together with members of Lower Green Road Residents’ Committee, said it had been done at short notice, but she was delighted some many children had participated.

She said: “It was fantastic to see the whole community come together to speak out about it.

“The whole idea of siting this phone mast off of Lower Green Road is seriously flawed. Phone masts can’t be put up close to schools but Vodafone would like to site this one in an area populated predominately by families with children - it’s madness.

She said she was taking the banner to the hearing and implored anyone that could make it to also go and show they supported the councillors’ decision not to grant planning permission.

She added: “It’d be awful if a low turnout allowed this to be pushed through.”

The appeal hearing starts at 10am today at the Civic Centre in Esher High Street.
