It was a crime worthy of the stunt magician David Blaine.
A gymgoer reported a mysterious theft to police, in which his iPhone and Tag Heuer Carerra watch were removed from a locked locker at the David Lloyd leisure centre in Cheam.
Ben Mackenzie, 30, of Worcester Park, opened the storage space to find his valuables missing, despite no sign of a break-in.
He said: “With no evidence of a break-in, this is clearly a huge security risk to all members. You expect a level of security for a £78 membership.
David Lloyd Cheam assured customers that CCTV cameras, security patrols and a photographic access system were in place to minimise crime.
A spokesman said: “There are permanent highly-visible signs advising members and guests to be vigilant of their possessions and that they leave valuables at their own risk.
“David Lloyd Cheam will continue to maintain a safe and secure environment for its members, guests and staff at all times.
"The matter is now in the hands of the police, therefore we are unable to make any further comment.”
