A new electronic form for benefit claimants was launched this week.

The council says the new way of claiming benefits is quicker and easier, and housing benefit advisors can now take claims over the phone, without the need for complicated and lengthy forms.

There are fewer questions on the new form, which was launched on Wednesday, July 22, and the process should be much quicker as a result.

Councillor John Drage, executive member for resources, said: “It is particularly important in the current economic climate that we help our residents in any way possible to claim the benefits they are entitled to.

“We are really simplifying the process so people get the help they need quickly and easily. The new electronic form, which can be filled in over the phone, will allow us to deal promptly and efficiently with customer claims and provide them with an even better service.”

The former Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit claim process could be complicated and prevent customers from claiming the benefits they needed.

Delays in processing claims could have a big impact on the most vulnerable residents in Sutton and lead to rent arrears and evictions.

Now a greater number of vulnerable residents will be offered a home visit and help to fill out their claim form.
