A popular park stretching across Richmond and Hounslow is set to become three times as big - and could one day extend as far as Heathrow.

Readers are being invited to have their say on plans to transform Crane Park from a 330,000sq m open space into nearly a 1,000,000sq m sprawling park - to be known as Crane Valley Park.

The proposed project, part of the Friends of the River Crane Environment’s (Force’s) Crane Valley Park feasibility study, was made possible after Crane was voted one of the London winners in the Mayor of London’s priority parks programme - netting it £400,000 earlier this year.

Force chairman, Rob Gray, said: “I think it’s great, it’s really exciting and it’s something we have been working on for a few years so it’s good to see it coming together.

“I would hope it will be a bigger and better park in two years time.”

The plan would see the current site grow to Twickenham Junction Rough, close to the train station, in Richmond and spread over Feltham Marshalling Yards on the Hounslow side.

Mr Gray explained that some of the land targeted in the report would need to be bought from private owners and said the biggest challenge would be to make use of the marshalling yards, which BAA and Network Rail have pinpointed as a possible train stabling for the Airtrack plan.

However, should this happen Mr Gray is hopeful that a compromise could be made whereby park plans are reduced to a strip of green space in the area in exchange for BAA helping fund the further expansion of the park all the way to Heathrow.

“There might be a means of providing BAA what they want and ensuring a great benefit to the rest of the corridor,” he explained.

“We have this downstream plan of linking it further - from the Thames here to Heathrow.”

The feasibility study, which Richmond and Hounslow Council’s helped fund, is available to see online and a consultation period will follow.

Spokesmen for both authorities said officials were keen to sit down with Force members and discuss the proposals further.
