A man has had a lucky escape after he picked up an unexploded bomb while helping to clear a garden in Chiswick.
The explosive was discovered this afternoon in the garden of a house in Grove Park Road, near the junction with Grove Park Gardens.
Jole Davis, 34, who lives at the house said he had been clearing out the garden with the help from neighbours when the bomb was discovered.
He said: “We were just digging up the garden when a neighbour picked it up and recognised it as being an incendiary device.
“We told him to put it down and called the police.
“They came round and took it away.
“They didn’t know any details but said it was a British bomb not a German one.”
Police arrived at the garden just after 1:45pm and cornered off the area for about an hour, while officers from the disposal unit dealt with the bomb.
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to reports of an unexploded bomb at a property but it is not clear what kind of device it is yet.”
She confirmed there had been no injuries.
The roads were re-opened by 3pm.
