A man needed 14 stitches after an attacker slashed at his face with a broken pint glass on train going through Selhurst.

The attack happened aboard a Victoria to Gatwick train about half past midnight on Friday July 10.

The victim, who had put his feet up on the seat, was chatting to his friend when he was confronted by a man sitting opposite him.

They argued and the man grabbed two pint glasses off the victim and his friend, smashing them before attacking his 26-year-old victim.

He tried to protect himself by putting up his arms but suffered cuts on his arms and needed 14 stitches for a cut to one of his ears.

Police were called to the scene but the suspect fled from the train at Selhurst before officers arrived.

British Transport Police (BTP) detectives are looking to identify a suited man, pictured in the CCTV image, who was on the train at the time.

They would like to speak to him in connection with the incident.

Detective Constable Darren Stenning, based at Croydon BTP station, said: "This was a vicious attack on a man who was returning home after a night out and I’m asking for anyone with any information that could assist my investigation into this incident to come forward.

"We’re also keen to speak to the man pictured in the CCTV image in connection with this incident and ask anyone who thinks they may recognise him to contact police."
