Disabled artists received a standing ovation at Epsom College for a series of dances about the Olympic games which has the Seb Coe seal of approval.
The Freewheelers theatre company of actors, dancers and film makers packed out the theatre on July 15 for an evening of film and dance.
Among the audience was the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Jan Mason and the Chairman of Mole Valley District Council, Councillor Tim Hall.
Journey to Olympus culminated in a dance about the colours of the Olympic flag and the bringing together of nations in celebration.
The award-winning Freewheelers, many of them in wheelchairs, meet several times each week for drama and dance sessions and also hold workshops to learn how to use a variety of media including video and work regularly with pupils at local schools.
The Freewheelers Theatre Company has been granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme which recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Seb Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now – three years out from the start of the Games.
“ I congratulate everyone involved in the Journey to Olympus for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”
The Freewheelers Theatre Company’s next big production is Your Call Is Important to Us which will be staged at Leatherhead Theatre in October as part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival.
