A council manager who worked with Croydon’s youth has died after being hit by a train in west London.

The council paid tribute to “dedicated” John Herbert, 36, from Coulsdon who worked for Croydon Connexions.

He was hit by a train at Southall station, west London on Saturday July, 18.

A council spokesman said: “We were deeply saddened to hear the news of John Herbert’s death.

“John was the borough manager of the Connexions youth service and, as such, had worked for the council’s children, young people and learners department since April, though he had worked with the council through the Connexions partnership for some years.

“John was committed to making Croydon a better place for young people, and was a dedicated and committed public servant with a distinguished career in Croydon.

“He was a well-respected officer who will be missed hugely by the council and those who worked with him.”

An inquest is due to be opened at Fulham Coroners Court this week.

A spokesman from British Transport Police (BTP) said: “I can confirm that the man who died after being struck by a train at Southall rail station on Saturday, 18 July, was John Herbert, aged 36, from Hooley, Surrey.

“The incident, which was reported to police at 1.40pm, is being treated as non-suspicious.

“BTP and Metropolitan Police officers attended alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.”
