A Kingston police officer is due to receive compensation after being subjected to racial and religious discrimination while a trainee.
PC Amandeep Kaur Grewal told a Reading employment tribunal she was discriminated against on 17 occasions while training at Hendon, although only two of these claims, against trainer PC Lucinda Rigby, were upheld.
The officer, who is of Indian origin, was one of 2,000 new recruits last year and attended the hearing between April 27 and May 1.
The panel ruled that although PC Rigby’s mistreatment of Mrs Grewal distressed her, it was not serious enough to amount to racial or religious harassment.
Instead it was deemed racially and religiously discrimination and “hurtful”.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We are disappointed that people feel the need to lodge an employment tribunal of this nature.
"We work extremely hard to create an environment that allows people to develop and prosper.
“We would like to point out that 15 of the 17 claims were rejected and we are considering our position concerning the two claims that were upheld by the tribunal.”
PC Grewal graduated from the training college in June 2008 and is currently serving at Kingston police station.
