A Tooting imam has turned television presenter after he was headhunted by an international channel for Muslims.
Imam Sulayman Gani, based at Tooting Islamic Centre in Upper Tooting Road, now works voluntarily for the Islam Channel, which broadcasts to Europe and Africa.
The 39-year-old father of five felt a little shaky at first, but soon took to it like a duck to water.
He told The Times of South Africa: “I was reluctant initially and nervous. However, over time I gained experience and it has helped me build confidence.”
The imam, who is originally from South Africa, now presents the shows IslamiQA and Hajj, but says his calling is still with the mosque.
He also serves as imam and chaplain for St Georges and Springfield hospitals in Tooting.
