A “failed rock star” has been awarded the Claygate Community Cup for his efforts in making the village’s annual Christmas light event a success.
Derek Huff, who has lived in the area for 14 years, was selected by Claygate Parish Council for the annual award for his dedication and contribution to the community.
The father of two’s talents for organising became apparent when he used his electrical knowledge to wire up the Christmas tree and change the bulbs every year.
He also organises the music for the stage events at the Claygate Parade and plays in the band which accompanies the annual fundraising fashion show.
A spokesman for the parish council said: “Derek is literally a one man band.
“His generosity of spirit and good humour and the relaxed, outwardly manner in which all is accomplished all contribute to making this annual occasion a success, is greatly appreciated by everyone involved.
“It is one of the events that make Claygate and the people who live here such a special community, making him a deserving winner of the Community Cup.”
